The thought of Salt Lake City automatically conjures up images of some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the United States. Their outdoor beauty is second to none in the West; however, there is more to this mountain oasis than just outdoor activities. It is the perfect destination for family fun.
My family and I recently traveled to Salt Lake City and were pleasantly surprised at how much their was to do with children (even small children). We purchased a ‘Connect Pass’ from the Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau (www.visitsaltlake.com). For $20 per adult and $16 per child ages 3 -12 (children under 3 are free) per day, you get admission to over 20 local attractions. Additional days can be added to your pass for an additional fee. Some of the attractions include the local museums, the Olympic Park, the Clark Planetarium, even lunch at the Lion House Pantry at Temple Square (which I recommend). One of the attractions my family enjoyed the most was the Hogle Zoo. It’s the perfect place with small children who might not be old enough to enjoy museums but will love seeing the animals and attractions at the zoo. Don’t miss the Conservation Carrousel. This new zoo attraction features 42 beautiful exotic and endangered animals hand-carved in the style of an authentic carousel created in the early 1900’s. Your kids will love it!
No matter what your religious affiliation, when in Salt Lake City you must see Temple Square. If you are lucky, you’ll get to hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir practice or perform. Walking the grounds of the Temple is a romantic experience no matter what your faith. The beautifully manicured lawns and reverent atmosphere make it the perfect after dinner stroll.
As for dinner, Salt Lake City has an array of options for both romantic nights out and an evening with the family. The Old Spaghetti Factory is one of my family’s favorites. Also, the Garden Restaurant atop the Joseph Smith Memorial Building shouldn’t be missed. You’ll get a perfect view of the city, and they have a family friendly menu.
During our stay, we stayed at the Hotel Monaco. Offering a government/military discounted rate, this is the perfect hotel if you are traveling with your pet. Known for its pet friendly policy, this beautifully decorated four diamond hotel even has a front desk greeter for your pet! They get a welcome packet with a free gift and souvenir food and water bowls. Even the humans at this hotel aren’t treated with that much attention to service (although pretty close).
Traveling to Salt Lake City is definitely worth the trip to enjoy the majestic mountains, beautiful scenery, great food and family fun. Although this article only scratches the surface of the adventures that await you in Salt Lake City (more articles to come in the future), I hope it shows you that Salt Lake City is more than just a ski destination. It’s fun indoors and out!
